About labels

Materials

Cut one by one: 60lb label paper, printed in full colour on the front, its backing slit so it peels from the middle. On a roll: white gloss, brushed silver and clear BOPP film, and a white gloss BOPP for the freezer; white polyester for barcodes, rating plates and asset tags; and fourteen papers: four plain white matte papers, one of them removable and one opaque enough to cover a label beneath it, two wet-strength papers for wine, beer and drink bottles, a semi-gloss paper for the freezer, Estate #4 with an antique matte finish made for wine bottles, a silver foil paper, five fluorescent papers for indoor labels that catch the eye, and a white kraft that is tamper evident. A label on a roll takes a matte or gloss laminate or a matte or gloss UV coat; the papers may also go uncoated. On clear and silver film and some papers, white ink goes under the colour where you mark it, or prints alone; the fluorescent papers print white or black ink alone.

Sizes

Cut one by one, fourteen sizes: small product labels at 2 x 3.5, 2 x 4, 3 x 4, 3.5 x 3.5 and 4 x 4 inches; long ones for a bottle or the edge of a box at 2 x 8, 2.75 x 8.5, 3.667 x 8.5 and 4.25 x 11; shipping and carton labels at 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 5.5 x 8.5 and 6 x 9; and a full 8.5 x 11 sheet. On a roll, any size from 1 to 12 inches a side, in eighths of an inch, typed in; a round label is 1, 1.5, 2, 2.25, 2.5, 3, 3.5 or 4 inches across. The editor opens on templates drawn for the size, or for the size nearest it.

Your file

Design it in the editor and the print file is made for you, at the label's full size with the extra edge the cut needs: an eighth of an inch. Keep words an eighth of an inch inside the edges. A label cut to the outline of your design is cut an eighth of an inch outside it, and the design must be in one piece. For white ink, mark the parts that get it, as you would foil; for black ink alone, the print check turns any colour to the grey it prints. A roll label goes to the printer as one PDF holding the artwork, its white ink and its cut line. To use your own artwork, upload an image (PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or SVG, up to 12 MB) and place it; a PDF is not taken. Before you pay, the print check tells you if a picture is too small to print sharply at that size, or if any words are too small to read.

How long it takes

Printing takes 4 to 5 business days for labels cut one by one, and 4 to 6 business days for labels on a roll. Delivery comes after that; the Shipping page has the times.

Questions

Cut one by one, or on a roll?
Cut one by one, each label peels from its own slit backing. On a roll, for a dispenser or a labelling machine, wound the way you choose.
What is the wind?
Which edge of the label comes off the roll first: its top, its bottom, its left or its right side. A labelling machine needs the one it takes; by hand, any way round will do.
How many labels are on a roll?
As many as fit, unless you choose 50, 100, 250, 500 or 1,000 a roll.
Can a label go in the freezer?
Yes: the white gloss BOPP, the semi-gloss paper and the silver foil paper come in freezer grades, made with an all-temperature adhesive.
What is a slit back?
A cut across the backing of a label cut one by one, so the backing splits in the middle and peels away without picking at a corner.
What is the smallest order?
100 labels cut one by one, then up to 5,000; 25 on a roll, then up to 100,000.
How long does printing take?
4 to 5 business days for labels cut one by one, 4 to 6 business days for labels on a roll. Delivery comes after that; the Shipping page has the times.
