About envelopes

Materials

Every envelope is 60lb uncoated paper, smooth and white, printed in full colour on the front. The #10 also comes two other ways: with a security tint printed inside, so what is in it cannot be read through the paper, and as peel and seal, its flap closed by peeling back a strip rather than wetting a glue.

Sizes

The #10, 4.125 x 9.5 in, is the business envelope, for a letter folded in three: with a window, for an address printed on the letter, or without. The A2, 4.375 x 5.75 in, holds a note card; the A7, 5.25 x 7.25 in, a 5 x 7 card or invitation. 5.875 x 9 in holds a half-letter booklet; 9 x 12 in a letter-size sheet flat, a catalogue or a folder; 10 x 13 in the same with room for more.

Your file

Design it in the editor and the print file is made for you, at the envelope's exact size. Envelopes are printed on the front only, the side without the flap, and with no bleed, so the eighth of an inch at every edge prints nothing; on a window envelope, nothing prints on the window or within an eighth of an inch of it. The editor shades both, and the print check tells you if any words, pictures or a background colour reach into them. An envelope is priced by how much of its front carries ink: up to a quarter, up to half or up to three quarters of it. The editor measures your front as you design and prices it, and a front with ink on more than three quarters of it cannot be printed. To use your own artwork, upload an image (PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or SVG, up to 12 MB) and place it; a PDF is not taken. Before you pay, the print check also tells you if a picture is too small to print sharply, or if any words are smaller than the press can hold.

How long it takes

Printing takes 3 to 5 business days. Delivery comes after that; the Shipping page has the times.

Questions

What is the smallest order?
100 envelopes. Runs are 100, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000 or 5,000.
Which side is printed?
The front, the side without the flap, in full colour. The back and the inside are left plain.
Why does the price change as I design?
An envelope is priced by how much of its front carries ink: up to a quarter, up to half or up to three quarters of it. The editor measures your front as you design and the price follows it. A front with ink on more than three quarters of it cannot be printed.
Can it be printed to the edge?
No. Envelopes are printed with no bleed: the eighth of an inch at every edge stays bare.
Where does the address go on a window envelope?
On the letter inside, folded so the address sits behind the window, in the lower left of the front. Nothing is printed on the window or within an eighth of an inch of it.
How long does printing take?
3 to 5 business days. Delivery comes after that; the Shipping page has the times.
Can I see it before it prints?
Yes. Before it goes in the cart you see the front as it will print and confirm it, with how much of it is ink, and the editor exports a PDF of your design.
